John Buchan Senior Public School opened in 1969 and was named after the thirty-fifth Governor-General of Canada who served from 1935 - 1940. Our goal is to create a community of adolescent grade 7 and 8 learners whose intellectual, physical, emotional, and social development is enhanced in a caring, safe and positive environment. Our students learn and practise social responsibility through a focus on Character Education embedded in our academic and co-curricular programs. We enjoy a diverse population of approximately 240 students drawn from six feeder schools. John Buchan is part of a campus community that includes Pauline Johnson Junior P.S. and Stephen Leacock Collegiate. It is located in the same building as Stephen Leacock.

Our School
As John Buchan Sr. P.S. shares the same building as the high school, our students share some of amenities of a high school such as the use of the pool, auditorium, library and cafeteria and are offered joint Music opportunities in Band. We also offer a thriving Student Leadership body with many opportunities for student voices to be heard and for students to participate in and various extra-curricular sports, teams and clubs through out the school year.

Student Participation
We encourage all our students to participate in a wide variety of activities including music, athletic events, Skills Canada Competition, leadership opportunities and academic achievements. We have an active Student Leadership Council that hosts events which promote school spirit. Our school’s mascot is represented by a Buccaneer.
Student Success
We celebrate all of our student successes. At the end of the school year, we celebrate academic excellence in all disciplines with awards in the form of trophies and plaques or Buchan "B" for student involvement. We promote and encourage students to strive for on-going effort and character development through our monthly Academic Recognition and Character Assemblies.

Our school is committed to work with Pauline Johnson Junior Public School and Stephen Leacock Collegiate to form a campus-like community for students, parents/guardians and staff. All three schools work collaboratively to provide an Arts and Culture Festival every spring to celebrate the Arts from K-12 and the diversity of our collective community.
Fundraising Events
In the Fall, students participate in and raise funds for the Terry Fox annual run for Cancer as well as supporting Canadian veterans with annual sales of poppies. Our students practice being charitable and empathetic by supporting local charities and agencies such as the Agincourt Community Services. We also fundraise for school based needs/events via the Student Council.

Student Life - Where You Belong
John Buchan prides itself on providing many programs to develop numerate, literate individuals who contribute to the school and their community effectively and positively. Our Guidance Counsellor is available to support students on an on-going basis and in high school course selections. Our monthly Recognition assemblies celebrate student accomplishment in areas of character building and on-going academic achievements. We also encourage students to be actively involved outside the classroom at John Buchan. Students can participate in student leadership; in reading programmes such as Red Maple; in Band; in sports, including Basketball, Baseball, Badminton, Cricket, Soccer, Softball and Volleyball and in clubs initiated out of student interests such as Hip Hop. We also enjoy special interest days such as Winter Activity Day and learning about financial literacy through the Junior Achievement programme.
What Sets Us Apart
Many opportunities are provided for our students to promote social responsibility through our academic and co-curricular programs. We encourage our students to lead well-rounded and fulfilling lives as learners. Our students are successful in a wide range of areas including Athletic Tournaments, Mathematic Competitions, Music Performances, Skills Canada, and Chess Tournaments. Our Student Leadership Council promote student involvement and positive, safe interactions. Our grade 7 & 8 students benefit from interactive peer anti-bullying initiatives in collaboration with Stephen Leacock High School students. Students also have the opportunity to access services and programs that are community based at the Community Road Show hosted in partnership with the Toronto Public Health and community agencies.
Parent and Community Engagement
Our parents attend our curriculum nights, Parent/Teacher/Interviews, Orientation Nights, Concerts, School Council meetings and use parenting resources available from our Parent Drop-in . We provide support to families who are new to Canada to services available in the community through our School Settlement Worker Services. We welcome teacher training placements from University of Toronto and York University and co-operative student placements from Ryerson University and Stephen Leacock Collegiate. Our school is involved with Junior Achievement, East Metro Youth Services, CAS (Children's Aid Society), CCAS (Catholic Children's Aid Society), Agincourt Community Services Association, Youthlink, and 42 Division Police Services.
