Fleming P.S. opened in 1990 on land that had been the Fleming family farm. The school has about 280 students who have opportunities to participate in a wide variety of programs. A YMCA daycare centre is housed in the school for children aged 2-10 years. We are committed to preparing children to meet the challenges of a constantly changing world. In partnership with our community, we promote the development of a positive self-image and respect for others. Our motto, "Everyone A Leader," focuses on the academic, social, and emotional growth of our students. Our multicultural school reflects the values and beliefs that make Canadian society culturally strong and enriching. We strive to build a community of learners and leaders.
Social Awareness
Fleming is regularly involved in initiatives that will heighten our students' awareness of what is taking place in society. Four years ago the school managed to raise $8500 through its involvement with the Free The Children/Me To We organization to build a school in Sierra Leone, one of the poorest countries in the world. Our students have gained awareness of many social issues and regularly support organizations such as the Yonge St. Mission, Julliette's Place, the Second Harvest Food Bank and others.
Leadership
Fleming continues to embrace the motto of, "Everyone A Leader." All students and staff will be given opportunities for leadership of varying degrees. The intermediate students and teachers have been working with the books,"The Leader In Me" and "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" to engage the grade seven and eight students in leadership throughout the school. Leadership opportunities are also to be made available to our staff and parents. It is our hope that all of our students and staff will be given the opportunity to show their potential while working within the nurturing environment of the school.
Technology
Fleming currently has twelve Interactive White Boards. In school training of interested staff members has allowed for the very effective use of the Smart Boards in twelve of our classrooms, by both teachers and students. Technology in each classroom supports integrated learning.
Performing Arts
We have committed to a number of TDSB Programs where The Performing Arts is our focus. Our teachers and students in various classes have the opportunity to work with guest Artists to create Spoken Word and dramatic pieces that are worthy of the audiences that we prepare for.
