Tom Longboat Junior Public School is located in the Malvern community, north west of the Malvern Town Centre. The school opened in 1978 and is named after Tom Longboat, one of Canada's Onondaga Aboriginals, who became a world-class long distance runner in the early 1900's. Tom Longboat is a multi-ethnic school that draws its strength from over 320 students who share their diverse backgrounds. The Longboat community reflects the values and beliefs that strengthen and enrich Canadian society. At Tom Longboat, we value strong community partnerships and recognize the importance of working together in a caring environment to ensure that all students develop the skills necessary to become responsible citizens.
School Focus
At Tom Longboat Jr. P.S. our main goal is to foster skills in students that will promote critical thinking and student success. Some strategies used to achieve this goal are:

Student Achievement
The purpose of education is to improve student academic achievement. In attaining this goal, we have focused on the three-part math problem solving approach, student created success criteria/learning goals and provide descriptive feedback to students on a regular basis. The success of all students is and will always be the priority at Tom Longboat.
The Arts
At Tom Longboat we firmly believe that Arts education facilitates academic growth. We are very dedicated in providing a variety of musical opportunities to all students. Visual Art, Drama and Dance activities also provide students with hands-on opportunities to express themselves. At Tom Longboat, we feel that a creative student is a successful student.
Athletics
Students at Tom Longboat benefit from daily physical activity and are provided with dedicated blocks of Physical Education and Health. There are many opportunities for students to participate in extra-curricular sports. The Daily Physical Activity initiative ensures that all students have the opportunity to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.
Tom Longboat Legacy
Students at Tom Longboat have the opportunity to contribute their thoughts and ideas in creating a new school logo. Recognizing that the current logo is outdated and may be considered offensive to some First Nations people, students have embraced the need to establish a logo that respectfully represents the spirit of the Canadian hero which the school was named after.

Student Life - Where You Belong
At Tom Longboat, we recognize that there are many different kinds of learners. By providing a wide variety of extra-curricular activities for students to participate in, we are allowing students to demonstrate a particular skill while gaining valuable life experience. The broad range of activities represented is a testament to the expertise and commitment of the teaching staff. Students are also given many chances to display their talents in front of others. Whether on the court, field, an assembly or through a formal performance, students are provided with the opportunities to demonstrate their success outside of the classroom.

Parent and Community Engagement
We will continue to make every effort possible to increase parent engagement at Tom Longboat Jr. P.S. We are fortunate enough to have a growing Parent Council who meet regularly and provide their input. Members of the Longboat staff represent the many cultures and languages of our students and community. Translators are available upon request and are present at major school information sessions. The voice of every parent and student is important and valued.
