Mason Road Junior P.S. opened in 1957 and is located in Scarborough Village in the southeast region of the TDSB. The school serves approximately 400 students from a diverse neighbourhood of apartment buildings, co-operative housing ventures, and single family homes. The cultural and linguistic backgounds of our students are quite varied, with over half of our students speaking a language other than English at home. We are proud of our richly diverse school and we try to engage with our community to enhance our students' education experiences at Mason Road. Our dedicated staff members provide a welcoming and nurturing environment for our students and guests.
School Mission
At Mason Road, our mission is to develop the academic, social and physical well being of all students in a positive, child centered environment. We are committed to helping students achieve their best; maximizing their potential through a sound academic foundation and evolving love of learning. This requires a partnership with our parents, agencies and the community. It requires modelling and practice of behaviours that develop and promote the growth of responsible members of Canadian society, capable of succeeding in a rapidly changing world.
Our Parenting and Family Literacy Centre
In September, 2009 our Parenting and Family Literacy Centre (PFLC) opened. The PFLC staff works closely with kindergarten teachers to help children build literacy and numeracy skills through stories, music, reading and playing that will help prepare children for school. The centre is free for caregivers and children up to 6 years of age and no pre-registration is needed.
Student Life - Where You Belong
Busy students are happy students and at Mason Road, our students are both busy and happy. Our teachers and educational assistants put the needs of our students first. They provide a welcoming and engaging learning environment to ensure that every child is able to achieve to the best of his or her ability. Students are invited to attend our twice-weekly homework club. There, students will complete homework in a quiet, focused environment supervised and assisted by staff and secondary student volunteers.
What Sets Us Apart
Our support staff sets us apart. Every member of the Mason Road staff works diligently to provide the best for our students and community. As you enter our school, the first thing you will notice is how clean and bright it is. Our caretaking staff is proud of the school environment and works hard to keep it shining well maintained. Our capable office staff welcome you to our school. They keep our busy school organized and ensure the communication between the school and community flows smoothly. In addition to a great day program, our school offers an International Languages Program (Tamil) through the Continuing Education Department of the TDSB. This program is designed to give students the opportunity to learn an additional language, other than English and French, and to learn about and appreciate diverse traditions, customs and cultures.
Parent and Community Engagement
We have an active and supportive school community. Our parents and caregivers help to supervise lunchroom programs, assist on field trips, provide transportation to sporting events, help in the library resource centre, and support our school-wide morning meal program. The School Council has been in operation for many years. The School Council works with school staff and administration to support school initiatives. Council members are informed and consulted on many issues including school activities, school and community safety, school organization, improvement plans and fundraising. The School Council meets four to six times throughout the year.
