Bliss Carman Senior Public School is dedicated to serving the wide variety of needs exhibited by early adolescent students. We have a strong belief in inclusive education and we support that belief through our academic programmes, a variety of co-curricular programmes and student support and leadership opportunities. The school is named after William Bliss Carman (1861 - 1929), the Poet Laureate of Canada. The building is over 30 years old and in excellent condition, due to the efforts of our caretaking staff, Board maintenance staff, teachers and students. We are located at Kingston Road and Bellamy Road South, and serve a large, multi-ethnic community.
Partnerships
Our school has a committed School Council that supports many school improvement initiatives and outreach to our parents. We have the regular and on-going support of a S.E.P.T. (Settlement and Education Partnerships in Toronto) worker who supports new immigrant families to our school. Our students and families also benefit from the regular and on-going programmes that we access through various community agencies such as our Itinerant Behaviour Team, Youthlink, Big Brothers and Sisters and Toronto Police.
We Care
The Bliss Carman Sr. staff is reflective of the diversity of our students. It is an effective team - teachers, caretakers, business and operations staff, administrators, support staff, parents - that is committed to supporting our students and their success. Our students, a delightful mix of cultures from around the world, participate in the wide variety of academic, co-curricular and leadership opportunities provided. Our students distinguish themselves by their strong leadership and commitment to social justice issues.

Literacy
We have implemented Teaching Learn Critical Pathways and have been working as Grade Teams in Professional Learning Communities to set strategic goals to improve our Grade 7 & 8 reading and writing scores. We are implementing Reading/Writing Workshops in many classrooms and our Library Partners in Action programme is designed to support our literacy objectives.
Numeracy
We have implemented numeracy blocks by grade and are working towards the implementation of 3 part lessons and inquiry-based problem-solving approaches. We are also supporting our students' learning through the use of manipulatives as well as accessing our Family of Schools math coach.
Pathways
The implementation of Differentiated Instruction across the curriculum has been a focus as we participate in the M.I. Lead project. We have a Family of Schools Student Success Committee that tracks students as they transition from feeder schools as well as students as they transition from our schools to secondary programmes.
Community, Culture and Caring
Bliss Carman has established a new student support structure called the Turn Around Program . This program is aimed at identified students and provides an opportunity to work with Guidance and teachers to identify preferred learning styles and practice goal setting strategies.
