Spencer Avenue Elementary School is a K-8 school, located on Spencer Avenue in Orangeville, just east of B Line and west of Riddell Rd. The school opened in September of 2014 and has a population of approximately 300 students, as well as thirty staff members. Most students live within walking distance from the subdivisions directly surrounding the school, with the exception of students attending the gifted program who are bussed to school.
Our school mascot is a Stallion, identified and chosen by our student, staff, and parent community. A large 3D stallion was created by numerous students with the support of a local artist, using natural and recyclable materials, and is hanging in the front foyer.
The wooden art piece viewed under this tab is also mounted in our main foyer and was completed as part of our grand opening in the Spring of 2015. It reflects words chosen by students and adults that are portrayed on wooden chips. This piece of art is of particular importance and pride, as it represents the vision of what Spencer Avenue ES is all about and how we commit to living and growing together.
Spencer Avenue Elementary School offers a junior and intermediate gifted program for students who meet criteria and are eligible through the class placement process. Presently, we have a junior class (grades 4 & 5) and an intermediate class (grades 6, 7 & 8). Students attending this program are bussed from a variety of locations across Dufferin-Wellington County and surrounding areas. Four busses transport students to and from school each day, with some routes including a transfer bus, depending on where students live.
Students who graduate from Spencer Avenue E.S. attend Westside Secondary School, with the exception of students graduating from the gifted program, who attend the high school located within their home boundary.
Spencer Avenue Elementary School has a very active School Council and parent community, who support many educational initiatives and community events. Funds raised by Council promote programming and provide additional resources, activities, and events for students and families. Parent volunteers are an integral part of the Spencer Avenue E.S. community. Students may also choose to participate in the lunch program, organized and run by Council, which offers a wide variety of foods, based on preference.
Spencer Avenue E.S. also offers healthy snacks to students who need a little extra food in their lunch, as well as lunch foods for students who may have forgotten or don’t have a lunch at school. This initiative is supported through Food and Friends funding and organized by our CYC and parent volunteers.
The YMCA operates a before and after school program to assist parents of students attending Spencer Avenue E.S. with childcare. Students may be dropped off as early as 7:00 a.m. and picked up by 6:00 p.m. The YMCA staff work closely with the school and parents to provide a variety of recreational and educational activities for children. As a school, we continually strive to build positive relationships with community partners and families, while providing quality programs and school experiences that benefit all students.
