Osprey Woods Public School offers a program with a strong emphasis on academic and literacy skills for students in kindergarten to grade 5. There is a focus on the use of technology, as well as an emphasis on creating a safe, caring and inclusive climate. As an alternative to the English language program, Osprey Woods also offers a French immersion program that begins in grade 1.
The community has a very supportive parent network and a very involved school council. We are fortunate to have many parents who volunteer in the classrooms, library, office, or as part of fundraising initiatives such as our weekly lunch program. The PLASP program is available before and after school, as well as during lunch hour, to provide childcare if needed.
Technology allows students and staff to produce their best work and learn the most up to date information and strategies for communication. An air-conditioned computer lab with a full class set of computers is located on the main floor, and every class is regularly scheduled to use the lab. Classrooms are provided with an LCD projector and other equipment, such as document cameras, to support classroom instruction.
The school was built with a philosophy of bringing the outside indoors. The use of oversized windows and natural light makes the classrooms bright and inviting. Twelve-foot ceilings in the second floor rooms provide for increased airflow and take the warm air upwards, away from the students and teachers during the warmer months. The massive atrium and wide halls contribute to a feeling of spaciousness. Outdoors, a woodlot has been preserved and is part of the playground. It has been fenced with two access gates to enable classes to investigate and appreciate the environment through hands-on investigation. Use of the outdoors is encouraged as teachers integrate language into outdoor education and science. Additionally, the school has a double gym. A strong physical education and extracurricular program has been implemented. Music, choirs and clubs are also encouraged.
Teamwork is emphasized, and teachers, staff and parents work together to create a professional learning community. Our teachers work as a team within their grade level and division, as well as by supporting whole school initiatives together.
We hope you are excited about the possibilities, and would like to be part of a community that is committed to working hard to make Osprey Woods a very successful school.
