Our staff and students are working to create a dynamic school environment that is warm, welcoming and inclusive. Our staff understand the importance of every child having a sense of belonging, and we invite parents to be our partners in their child’s education. We are committed to developing well rounded students who think critically, are effective problem solvers and, most important, who are good citizens – kind to their peers, respectful of those around them, able to stand up for what is right and who understand their responsibilities in a democratic environment. Students at Jersey are learning to advocate for themselves and show a willingness to help one another grow and learn. They pride themselves on their achievements, understand that success comes through hard work, and are committed to the goals they have set out for themselves.
Our school is made up of approximately 310 K – 8 students which is likely to grow as the Georgina community develops in the near future. Our school includes a Parent and Family Literacy Centre which is open to all Georgina parents of pre JK students on a drop in basis 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday to Friday. We also host the Kinark Before and After School program which helps to provide a seamless transition for students at the beginning and end of the school day.
Mission
As a staff we believe: "The classroom environment should foster the acceptance of individual differences, co-operation and self-respect. A safe and caring environment enhances learning. Teachers should spend a major portion of class time interacting directly with students. A variety of instructional approaches are necessary to accommodate individual learning needs and strengths. Expectations of students should be high. Students share a sense of ownership in the school. Positive self-esteem enhances learning."
History
When the first Jersey Public School opened it received its name as a result of being located in the Village of Jersey in 1870. The school was a log building, located south of the Maskinonge River – (some called it the Jersey River). The second Jersey School was built in 1878 on our present sitebut this log building was destroyed by a fire. The thrid Jersey school was built in 1904. It was a one room school house for students from grades 1-8. Jersey P.S. was officially opened in 1946. Additions were placed on the original school in 1954/56/59/69. In 2006, Jersey Public School was rebuilt and opened as it is today.
Our school motto is "Respectful, Responsible and Reasonable".
Our school mascot is The Jersey Hawk.
